  2. Bring the right evidence. The method becomes more useful when the inputs are concrete: real observations, actual constraints, explicit goals, and known tradeoffs.
  3. Use the framework to sharpen judgment, not replace it. A framework is a thinking aid, not an oracle.
  4. Produce an explicit output. Do not end with “good discussion.” End with a map, decision, experiment, shortlist, or action.
  5. Review the output against reality. Ask what would falsify the conclusion or force a different decision.

Applying JTBD creates a common language for the team. Instead of debating in the abstract, the team can organize evidence, compare options more systematically, and move toward a stronger recommendation.

A good PM outcome is not merely “the framework was filled out.” The real outcome is that the team can now say:

  • what it believes,
  • why it believes it,
  • what remains uncertain,
  • and what it will do next.

Practical caution: The strongest job statements describe the progress a person is trying to make in a real context, not merely a task list.
